G41 beeps and blank

#1 Post by hermit » Fri Nov 30, 2007 4:06 pm

Hi everyone,

I have a G41 and now when I turn it on, it has 1 long beep and 2 short beeps. The screen is blank and nothing else happens.

I swapped memory and video card but still no go. Anything else I can do short of replacing the system board?

Thanks!

The hardware Maintenance Manual says it's most likely the system board, but could also be the LCD assy or the DIMM.

same problem here, did you get yours working?

I've got the same problem and with a G41 it is a 2886 79U.

I replaced the system board with a used one from ebay. That didn't solve it.
I replaced the video card. That didn't solve it.
I replaced the lid which includes the LCD panel, and inverter. That didn't solve it.

I haven't tried the memory or CPU.

There are 2 sticks of memory, and it has the same problem if either one is put in the primary spot. So if it is the memory they both would have had to fail at the same time.

The CPU is the 3.33 Mobile Pentium 4, which is the prescott series. I googled to see if anyone has reported that cpu failing, and I didn't find anything. I'm considering getting a refurb 2.80 Mobile Pentium to see if that makes solves it.

Since I don't have a working G41, I can't verify the replacement parts all work.

Has anyone tried mini pci post card in a thinkpad?

Does anyone have suggestions of things I can try?

This seems like a relatively common problem for the g41. The guy I bought the lid from said he had a few g41s that did this and he couldn't figure out how to fix them.

solved: video card

I finally solved the problem. It was the video card. I got a cheap g41 that just needed a new fan, but otherwise worked. And then when I put in my replacement video card it did the 3 beep thing. When I put the working video card in my original system it started working again.

So my original video card went bad. And the replacement video card was also bad. I'm not sure what happened to the original one or the replacement, they aren't cheap (~$100) so it would be nice to know how to fix them.
