I can't restore a native resolution of my display, help...

#1 Post by sebwaw » Fri Nov 30, 2007 6:42 pm

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad R61i. I'm having issues with my display. During booting just before logging on to the system, the display switches to the lowest resolution. After being logged on, a balloon message appears saying that the resolution of the display is set to the lowest level. Click here to let the system set automatically its resolution. Yet it doesn't help. Nor when I want to restore it manually. It gets back to the lowest resolution every time I try to set to 1280x800. I check all the drivers and everything seems fine. I'm writing this post with a resolution of 640x480.

Is anybody there who could help me. .. I've been racking my brains for a week....nothing works...I would be very, very grateful to anyone..

Have you tried simply uninstalling the present driver and reinstalling a fresh driver--should be available from the lenovo website. Get the latest driver from Lenovo first, uninstall the present driver, reboot and when it says whatever is found as far as the display adaptor point it toward your new driver. Sounds to me like your driver is corrupt for some reason.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did exactly the same thing. I uninstalled the driver (Intel Graphic Accelarator driver), rebooted . And then, everything got back to normal ( 1280x800), but with the default video card and display. I downloaded the drivers from the Lenovo website. I reinstalled the drivers and rebooted. Guess what happened. Again, the resolution switched to 640x480. So now I use the default settings until someone comes up with an idea of what is the reason of all of this. Any more tips ?

It sounds like Lenovo's driver has problems. Try getting the driver from either Intel's site or through Windows Update.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I downloaded the driver from Intel's site but during installation an error occurs saying that this driver is not compitible with this computer. Try to get the driver from the manufacturer site. Yet another problem occured. When I want to try install the Lenovo's driver once again an error occurs "copying the files has failed . the installer will close". So now, I'm done. Nothing works.

Silly but when you say you downloaded and installed the drivers, did you go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE to run and install the package after it was unpacked by the initial 7ldXXXXXX.exe setup?

Display (Intel GL960, GM965 - Intel X3100) driver for Windows Vista 32-bit - ThinkPad.

Display driver (Intel 940GML, 945GM, GL960, GM965 - 950, X3100) for Windows XP, 2000 - ThinkPad.

I don't know if it's feasible but you could always, as a last resort, do the Thinkpad recovery scenario, i.e., backup all of your data and then do the factory recovery thing-- THAT should solve it. If it doesn't then there is some sort of hardware problem with your display and it should be replaced. If you go this route make sure that you have all of your data backed up and a list/source files (CD's, DVD's, etc.) of your apps for reinstall. Alternately, have you tried a System Restore to an earlier restore point?

Sometimes when I have encountered similar things where it is IMPOSSIBLE to figure out what to do next I go the full wipe the drive/reinstall everything from scratch technique. In the case of your R61 you have the recovery option which with my other PCs I had to wipe the drive and start from ground zero. I have an R61 that I recently got and had to go the full factory recovery route early on and it went smoothly. Oddly, it reinstalled all of the trial software except for MSFT Office Trial. Everything else was there and there haven't been any problems since.

Yes, I did everything in the right way with the setup.exe installation :) I downloaded exactly the same driver you indicated.

Yeah, as a last resort I could do the thinkpad rescue and recovery thing I know. I wanted to avoid it . Yesterday I succeeded in installing the drivers and somehow everything got back to normal. But today, before logging on to the system the resolution again switched to the lowest level. After I reset the computer the resolution got back to normal. I don't really know what my computer is suffering from. If the bad things repeat regularly, I'll restore the system as a last resort. Thanks guys for help and interest.

this might be way off base, but i'll mention it anyway. i sympathize with your reluctance to go all the way back to zero!

i've noticed with some things (wireless, for example), IBM Access Connections fouls up settings i've modified elsewhere. same goes with Presentation Director. maybe triple check all of these native ThinkPad utilities to make sure they're not causing you ill effects?

like i said, shot in the dark... i'm not even sure what comes with the R61 as i'm still stuck with my A31. wanna trade?

Thanks again for your comments. However, a bit frustrated I was and restored the system and everything works fine now. Except one little thing. The system shuts down very long even after I modified waittokillservicetimeout to 7000 in the registry. Rescue and Recovery is a great thing. Without losing your data, you can get the Windows settings to the first day.
