I own a ThinkPad R50e. I have regularly updated the system using Think Vantage system update. After the last update about 2 weeks ago, my TrackPoint device stopped working.
The device is still recognized by the system but there seems to be a problem with the latest driver since a message appears that says something like "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. ... ( Code 37)"i. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver. When trying to reinstall the latest driver, that isn't possible unless I install an older version of the driver first. Then the installation of the latest driver is possible and on the next startup, the TrackPoint works ok, but only for the duration of current session. If i restart computer again, TrackPoint stops working.
It seems the driver gets overwritten somehow. I think something happens during shutdown.
Any idea on how to fix this?

First of all, welcome to the forum!
Here's how I'd go about it:
a) If your system is set to shut down and download updates while doing so, change the setting. Personally, I'd stick to restricting the updates altogether and set them to be downloaded and installed manually.
b) Plug in a USB mouse and then go into deleting everything and anything related to TrackPoint. Reboot as many times as needed until XP sees it as "new hardware" and then install whatever driver you were using previously.
Hope this helps. Let us know what the results were.

this totally worked
Deleting the lenovo...trackpoint directory, uninstalling ps/2 trackpoint from devices & rebooting restored my trackpoint!
