Is it possible to pair one 5300 RAM with one 4200 RAM?

#1 Post by Reyngel » Sat Dec 15, 2007 9:51 pm

I have one faulty bar of RAM, and I need to buy a new stick of RAM to go with my existing working one. I'm wondering if it'd be a problem to have different speeds working together? My current one is 4200. If I add a 5300 one to it, is it problematic? Or does it not matter if they match?

And actually, it's not like RAM is all that expensive, anyway. Crucial has a 2GB kit (1GBx2) 5300 for $55.99. Should I just start fresh and get this instead of just the one bar of RAM?

Mixing the 533MHz and 667MHz speed RAM is fine, however, both will run at the lower speed. Using two same size sticks will improve performance (dual channel mode) over just one stick or two different sized sticks. Dual channel mode can operate at either speed, but in your case, it would be at 533MHz.

Two new identical 667MHz sticks will of course work well, too.

Trivia bonus question: What is faster, dual mode 533MHz or single mode 667MHz for the same amount for RAM?

Answer...I have NO idea!

from what i see, the dual channel 533 would be faster than the single 667 channel. only due to the fact that while in dual channel mode the bandwidth rate is doubled. so the PC4200 533 would be at 8.4GB/per second (single 533 banwidth is 4.2 gb/s)as to the single channel 667 is at 5.3 gb/s. im not sure but thats what i think i seen. let me know if thats incorrect.

Reyngel, your Z60m runs at 533MHz regardless of whether you have two PC2-4200 sticks, one PC2-4200 plus one PC2-5300, or two PC2-5300 sticks.
