Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet on G41

exactly what is this and when would I use it?

It's the network card in the ThinkPad for cabled networks or dsl etc.
T61p 6460-67G; 15,4 WSXGA+ W7P x64, no hairdryer.

so I could plug my cable router through this instead of my standard ethernet connection? would there be an advantage to this?

Yes you can connect to your router through it. Not knowing what you mean by "standard ethernet connection" I can't speak of any advantage. It can theoretically handle Gigabit speeds, but the other components, i.e. router also need to be able to deal with Gigabit.

That is the only wired ethernet conection you have via RJ-45 jack in the back...it works wonders when plugged into the right stuff that most of us don't have...yet.
