What R52's have the 533FSB ?

#1 Post by sikpupy » Sat Dec 22, 2007 4:49 pm

Okay, I am [censored] now! So, whats the difference in chipsets on the R52 and how can I tell? Lenovo site is practically worthless then as it does not clearly differentiate the two, and, if you try do do a serial number search, it loops you around in circles, what a ***** . I am [censored], I just bought a crappy $250 celeron unit on ebay I can not upgrade because of this. I am better off with my T41! I think Lenovo should reimburse me for it.

Are there any tag specific numbers I can see right off hand or is this just a big bag of tricks that makes me just go get a HP or something? I sure cant ask ALL the owners to take off thier kepbaords and check the chip number, and, Lenovo's site sure isnt telling!

Beofre anyone gets jiggy with me, here is what I see on the site:

On the general page....

Processor Intel Mobile Pentium M 730(1.6GHz), 740(1.7GHz), 750(1.8GHz), 760(2.0GHz), 770(2.13GHz)
Intel Celeron M 350(1.3GHz), 360(1.4GHz), 370(1.5GHz)

and on the specifics page....

Processor
Available processors:
Intel Mobile Pentium M 730, 740, 750, 760, 770
Intel Celeron M 350, 360, 370
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology
L2 cache memory:
Intel Mobile Pentium M - 2 MB of L2 cache memory
Intel Celeron M - 1MB of L2 cache memory

Memory
64-bit Double Data Rate (DDR) non-parity SDRAM memory
PC2-4200 at 533MHz
Two 200 pin SO-DIMM memory slots, one slot is pre-populated with 256MB, 512MB, or 1GB leaving one socket available
Supports up to two 1GB SDRAM SO DIMMs
Supports maximum memory up to 2GB

No where does it say if's and or butt's to tell me for sure what board is fully 533fsb supported. I am looking at a 1849-9WU to replace the crap thats coming in on the boat now, but, where can I be gurranteeded it is a 533 chip? Do I need the 85 series units?

Thanks all and sorry for the vent. I was up till 3am searching all day and I thought i had it figured out. Last and final thought is to maybe fall back on a t43 then????

Welcome to the forum!

What an interesting first post you made.

I love it how you think that Lenovoshould reimburse you, because you bought some piece of crap on eBay without doing proper research first.

I guess it is not your fault that you did not know about the existence of the Tabooks, that give you the most full and exact information about every Thinkpad model ever made, because they are not advertised openly on their site, and even when you find them, navigation inside can be confusing.

In any case, here is the link to the book of Thinkpads withdrawn after the Lenovo takeover, where you will find full info on every US R52 model:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... twbook.pdf

To save you some time reading, I can say that:

All R52 models with a Celeron M have the 910GML chipset @400MHz bus.

All R52 models with a Pentium M have the 915GM/PM chipset @533MHz bus.

As simple as that. However, it gets slightly more complicated after this. If you go to Intel's site, it will tell you that the Pentium M CPUs @533MHz bus support the 910GML chipset, however it will also tell you that the 910GML chipset supports only Celeron-M, so I don't know what to think of it.

Perhaps it means that the CPU in principle is compatible with the chipset (electrically compatible), but you shouldn't expect it to automatically work. Maybe the CPU will just run at 400MHz, meaning it will be 25% slower than the rated speed (which makes it hardly an upgrade).

If you're getting the Celeron-M model, looks like you might be stuck out of luck.

Oh, and don't blame Lenovo. If you consider yourself to be an advanced user, advanced enough to order a unit and upgrade it yourself, you should also do the proper technical research, and not rely on Lenovo's marketing site which is designed for the "lay men".

Sounds like you're just upset because you wanted to buy something really really cheap and upgrade it really cheap, and now looks like it will cost you more than you thought it would.

thanks for the info. How much research am I really needed to do if I go to lenovos site and they say nothing about two different boards? All they say is supports A to Z . Not A to I supports 400 and J to Z supports 533 . They dont even show two different chipsets, so, how am I to know to even LOOK for something different? When I found out by accidentally running acorss this site, after I bought the ebay POS, thats when I REALLY dug into it. I was just looking for a faster chip and............whala, there it was, on this site, 400 AND 533. Thats okay, its still a good computer I should get my money back on, but, still, yea, Lenovo should reimburse me for not noting there are two different chipsets in the R52.

Oh, and for the record, like was stated, I tried to search lenovo best I could but it keeps circling me back to the screen that you can choose from IBM or LENOVO support. Looking on the web didnt give me much either. At the time, I didnt see anything pointing to 400fsb and assumed since it was newer than a 42, and 43 picked up on 533 a R52 HAD to be 533. Well, lesson learned I guess. I am not so mad I have to shuffle the laptop I got around, but, I have other things in my life I want to do than to sit and wait on ebay winnings. Oh well, I digress................

Thanks for the info, its what I was looking for and needed in the first place, thaks.
