Thinkpad A31- fan/heatsink differences
Hello,
This is my first post on this forum. I have just purchased an IBM Thinkpad A31 for my wife. I'm in the process of upgrading it from a 1.6Ghz processor to a 2Ghz processor. (For what my wife does I think this will be fine.)
In upgrading I have figured out that there are two different fans. FRU 62P4092 and FRU 46L4697. I've come to realize that the 62p4092 is for hotter processors.
What I really want to know is some specifics about the differences of these two heatsink/fan assemblys. I've talked to IBM who couldn't or wouldn't tell me specifics. Is it rpm's or the size of the fans, what exactly? If anyone could shed some light on this I would really appreciate it. Can't find this info anywhere else. This forum looks like a wealth of knowledge.
Thanks
Dan

let's compare the fans on these heatsinks
Ok how about this? Can those of you with A31's give us first the speed of your Mobile P4 M and then the rpm's of your fan under full load? Then we can see if the fans on A31 with hotter cpu's spin faster than those with A31's that are slower. You will need to run your systems at full load and then make note of the fan's rpms. Don't forget to make note of your cpu's speed as well.

First of all, welcome to the forum!

My "main" A31p runs cooler with 100Gb Seagate than it had with 100Gb Hitachi, both 7200 rpm. And that's just the beginning of the story...from the hardware side, let alone the software aspect.
To put it very mildly: I've owned well over 100 A3x series ThinkPads, and some of them have differed tremendously in this aspect while having completely identical specs theoretically.
ThinkPads have minds of their own. That's where the love/hate relationship sets in with most of their owners...
BTW, you're not supposed to bump your thread more often than every 72 hours per forum rules. If you want to add/adjust/delete sections of an existing post, you can use the "edit" button at the upper RH corner.

You've got one too many variables in that equation. Heat is not only CPU related, and will vary greatly with settings and components. Can those of you with A31's give us first the speed of your Mobile P4 M and then the rpm's of your fan under full load? what do you think
Thank you for the welcome.
You said"too many variables" I was thinking if everyone put a full load on the cpu using prime95 the fan's on these two different models of heatsink assemblies might spin at their fastest and then could be recorded and compared.
The idea is to get the cpu temps up as much as possible. It's less about the cpu and more about the max rpms of the two different fan/heatsink assemblys for comparison sake.
As someone who has owned many A31's what do you think the differences are between these two models of fan/heatsink assembly? Is it rpms or fan size or something else?
Thanks and sorry about the"bump". I'm new.

It's been years since I've last opened one, but I don't think it was the size of the fan...
