EXTREMELY SLOW INTERNET BROWSING, HELP!
EXTREMELY SLOW INTERNET BROWSING, HELP!
I just opened my R61i yesterday and the wireless internet browsing is INCREDIBLY slow. Not just normal slow, but slower than my old Sony from over 5 years ago with an inserting wireless card. It can take upwards to 5 minutes to load a simple web page sitting right next to the wireless router with excellent connection. I'm running it on Windows Vista and I've tried both IE and Firefox. I have no add-ons and it's brand new so I haven't made any changes. Has anyone figure out why it's running so slow? Or are these machines really just that poor in function when it comes to internet speed??
PLEASE HELP! IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!
PLEASE HELP! IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!
i have the basic firewall on so it shouldn't be the cause of such extreme slow browsing speeds, i have the latest updates on my wireless, and it shouldn't be the firmware for my router because we have 4 other computers using the same wireless and running at blazing fast speeds (much older laptops). I'm guessing this is a problem with the R61 and i'm hoping someone from IBM/Lenovo will know what the specific issue is since there seems to have been some others with the same issue but no result.
Hi,
I'd say the best thing to do would be to "upgrade" to Windows XP.
At any rate, I recently purchased an R61i for my wife, with the built-in Intel Pro wireless, and web browsing in Vista, while connected to a Linksys WRT54G usually ran at 'normal' speed.
I ended up reverting to XP due to numerous Vista performance issues, (including wifi connectivity simply dropping for no reason) but you may want to try downloading the driver from Lenovo, removing the device and driver from the Device Manager and then add the device & driver back again to get the default settings. Just a thought....

I too had a slow-down problem that was progressively worse .. not just browsing but some of my big apps as well. My HDD almost never stopped spinning. Starting PS or Inventor took forever, and Netscape was crawling as well.
I concluded that my OpSys (WXPP on an A31p w 2GHz, 2gb mem and 160GB HDD) was the culprit .. did a restore .. reloaded my apps .. and things are as snappy as ever. To be sure this is a bit of effort.. but it worked for me.
I am not convinced yet that AV and FW are the main culprits today .. but that with time the OpSys performance degrades.
Too bad that a WXPP reinstall is not as painless as was my W98SP2 ... but then I had so many blue screens and OpSys events with 98 .. that I kept a copy of the install set on my HDD to reinstall almost every other day.. well maybe every third day.
