R40 2722 problems with cdrw/dvd drive

#1 Post by miniredcooper » Fri Jan 11, 2008 5:23 am

Hi Guys,
have searched and can't find a solution to this problem.

The BIOS and device manager can't see my drive. The drive powers on and spins but isn't recognised anywhere on my system.

I have tried editing the registry, tried a different drive, tried 'cdgone' all to no avail.

In IBM diagnostics I am getting the message 'NO CD-ROM/DVD DRIVE or MSCDEX device driver installed'

Can anyone point me in the right direction - I have heard scare stories of faulty mobos etc causing this problem.

I have the same type of R40, it's really shame to have such issues :-(

Have you tried booting from the drive, whether it isn't a windows issue only?

Thanks for the quick reply kajencik. Looks like I've found a forum that people use.

I will try booting from disc later today and let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the advice :D

This problem sounds so similar to mine... I tried rebooting on the CD/DVD but to no avail. When I removed the optical drive and replaced with floppy drive, it booted OK. Have you found a solution to this already?

Rosh

Hi Rosh,
not had time to mess about with computers recently - just had a new baby two months ago - so he is taking up my time.
The machine boots fine - just won't recognise the drive - heard stories of errors with the motherboard before - really hope that isn't the case with my machine.
Will keep you posted when the little guy gives me a chance to tinker.
Thanks.

Cheers...
Best Regards,
Rosh

I have the same model R40 (2722) and the exact same problem :(

Anyone have any suggestions that I could try?

Thanks

wow, this is an old thread :-) The simplest solution IMHO is to get a new combo or DVD-ROM drive, they are really cheap nowadays (unles you want a DVDRW)

I am not sure if I skipped a lot of troubleshooting but I replaced the mobo and it solved the problem. :D

Thanks - I have tried swapping the dvd out with a known good unit and the problem still remained :( ....

Cheers - New motherboard fixed it - sounds expensive  in a relatively old old laptop! and I don't have a spares unit I could use. Maybe I should just live with it and use an (external) usb-dvd when I have to have one.

Thanks again to you both - Bonog
