r40 reflow GPU success - now need used HHD plastic guide

#1 Post by jimnto » Sat Jan 12, 2008 11:53 am

I melted my hard drive guide rail assembly (plastic on the bottom and the top metal part is OK) when I reflowed my GPU. Laptop seems real good now so I should try to figure out where those spare screws go :!: and get a used hard drive guide rail assembly.
Here is a link to an exploded view. It is part 19 (hard drive guide rail assembly 46P3120)

I would like a used one in Toronto Canada if possible.

Thanks

Thanks for the ebay link - that is quite fantastic (if it sells for a reasonable amount)

Thanks

What did you use to reflow your GPU with? Not that I don't know what's being used both on a pro, semi pro and shade tree level I'm just curious what you did. Paint gun or hot air reflow?

reflow technique

#5 Post by jimnto » Sun Jan 13, 2008 11:03 pm

Well, it really does remain to be seen how well it worked. As I said, a few missing screws and I need to replace the HDD guide rails so I haven't really taken it around but....... fingers crossed so far sooooo good!

I thought I was so smart. I made a mask out of sheet metal and even put some little walls around to focus the heat and I wrapped the motherboard in tin foil. I also borrowed my brothers infra red (or is it UV??) anyway, it has a red laser dot that you point to get the temperature. Then I used a heat gun with timed instructions. about two minutes top and bottom to get the board up to 160C then two minutes at above 180 (more like around 200 - 215 - pretty hard to keep the temp down actually!!). then a 2 min cool down.

I will definetely let this thread know when or if I start to experience some of the same problems.

Thanks for all help.

JN
