R61i black task bar

#1 Post by esgaroth » Tue Jan 29, 2008 6:02 pm

Hello everyone,
I work for an official Lenovo dealer in northern California. We have been selling the R61i as one of our laptops. We have been having a problem on this model after installing Norton anti virus. Occasionally the computer will start up to a black task bar. There are no icons and no start button. Just a black bar at the bottom. The desktop icons show up but none of them work. It appears that explorer just isnt loading all the way. I can bring up task manager and close and reopen explorer.exe and everything is usually fine.

We have been getting these computers with xp pro pre-installed on them. The only changes we have made are uninstalling trial software, installing Firefox and Spybot, and running windows updates.

It seems that this problem only occurs after installing Norton. But since this is such an intermediate problem I can't be completely sure. This isn't just one computer either it's happened on about a dozen or 2 computers.

Has anyone else seen this problem or am I the only one? I couldn't find any search results to match. Any help or input would be appreciated.

Sounds like a Norton problem. Easy solution, ditch Norton.

Buy a volume license for Eset Nod32. Your customers will thank you.

Trendmicro, ironically, their office and Symantec are within a block away from each other.

[rant]And they are starting to act more amd more like each other. We used to recommend Trend Micro but lately I have seen more instances of Trend Micro getting bigger and bigger (bloat wise) and becoming more of a memory hog. We have seen instances where TM is using more than 300 mb of ram and will continue to do so for over a day without releasing, so It is not just while it is updating.
It does seem to do a good job of keeping the computer clean but at the expense of making the computer unusable. Kind of like Norton products (not to be confused with Symantec Corporate).[/rant]
