R51E not working with 2GB of memory

#1 Post by dknudson001 » Tue Feb 05, 2008 9:52 pm

I have an R51E that came with 256mb and 512mb in each slots. These are DDR2, PC2-4200. I purchased two x one gb sticks of gskill DDR2 PC2-5300. When I place either of the gb sticks into either slot it boots fine and CPU-Z recognizes the memory. There is no problem when I place the 512mb into the other slot either. The problem arises when I place both of the 1gb sticks in the memory slots. When I turn the pc on, it doesn't boot. It will turn on but it doesn't boot windows or anything. I have updated the BIOS but have no idea what else to do.

Please help!

Welcome to the forum. I am a newbie myself.

The R51e is spec'ed for 2GB max.

With that said, how many chips are on these 1GB SODIMMs, 8 chips or 16 chips each? The memory bus may not be able to drive 32 chips. You may need 8 chip 1GB SODIMMs.

they are 16 each, how do I determine if the memory bus will support 32?

It is hard to tell if the Lenovo parts are 8 chips each. Good thing is that these SODIMMs are very cheap, around $20 each in the Bay Area.
