Earlier this afternoon, my Thinkpad R61 running Windows XP SP2 crashed.
When I did a hard reboot, I didn't hear any sound and I couldn't connect to the Internet with dial-up. (Yes, I use dial-up). I found that the sound card and the modem disappeared from the Device Manager.
I tried to install the SoundMAX audio driver from here.
After failing, I read the instructions and noticed that I had to install this first (the High Def Audio thing from Microsoft).
But, even after running the .exe and rebooting, it is still not showing up in Device Manager.
I searched the forums and found that several users have had audio issues, particularly after clean installations of XP. But, everyone seemed to report that the problem was fixed after they installed the High Def driver.
My problem is that the High Def driver isn't installing. It's just not showing up in Device Manager.

With IBM/Lenovo drivers downloading an exe. file doesn't end the process. Have you unpacked it from the appropriate folder?

Yes. I made sure that the High Def driver was installed (it shows up in Add/Remove Programs). Then, I went to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO\Setup.exe, which was where the Lenovo SoundMAX .exe unpacked itself.ajkula66 wrote:With IBM/Lenovo drivers downloading an exe. file doesn't end the process. I run Setup, but it tells me that my sound hardware doesn't match the driver.
I'm guessing that when other users had this problem, they still saw "Unknown Device"(s) in Device Manager. My problem is that I don't see anything like that; it seems that both the Modem and the sound card went poof after my computer crashed yesterday.
