Vista to XP, a small niggle
Vista to XP, a small niggle
New R61i, changed OS from Vista Home Premium to XP Pro.
After changing BIOS, downloading the Lenovo updates, re-installing Net 2, downloading the correct wireless and sound drivers, and the MS hotfix for HDA it all seems OK.
But...in Device Manager there is a small yellow exclamation mark by 'SM Bus controller'.
The chipset is GM965 Express, but I can't get it to load into XP. Lenovo Tech. basically said "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Should I
a) expect problems, and,
b) do something to avoid these potential problems: and what?
Thanks.
PS Great help this forum. I found the MS hotfix solution around page 5; none of the techies I know had a clue.

Try the ACPI driver. Properly loaded, it should show up as Thinkpad PM Device.

Thanks, but that isn't it.
Found the driver on the Lenovo site, also found it on the Thinkpad, but not in the right place. Uninstalled, installed new one, (same version), to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IBMPM,>reboot, >device manager>SM Bus controller. Still got that pesky yellow exclamation mark.
Tried reinstalling driver from inside SM Bus controller: no take.

Just to be sure, have you run the installer after running the downloaded some_digits.exe file? When you run the donwloaded file, it's usually not the installer itself, iit just extracts the driver, try running the setup.exe from C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IBMPM directory

Fred:
Already tried that, not a flyer. Thanks anyway.
SJ: The chipset is GM965, (as found by Intel's #Identify your chipset' tool. It is not on the list you linked to, but a bit of mining came up with this;. However, when I mentioned in OP it won't load into XP, I have just seen I was trying to load the Mobile GM965. A quick look can't locate the drivers for the (plain old notebook) GM965, but they will be somewhere, so will try later.
Thanks.
