R61i memory upgrade problem

#1 Post by GTS » Sat Feb 16, 2008 5:00 pm

I've recently bought a low spec R61i (it's a T2310) with 2x512MB of memory. I bought compatible 2GB memory but after I've fitted it, the machine issues 4 beeps and won't boot up. The manual says that 4 cycles of 4 beeps is a "Security Chip" problem but this is just one lot of 4 beeps.

When I reinstall the original memory everything works (apart from Vista being a bit slow with the 1GB RAM).

Does this mean the new memory is faulty or is there some other issue that I've missed? (I checked the bios but can't see anything that would make any difference)

most likely incompatible rather than faulty.

one way to troubleshooot faulty is try the RAM one at a time.

I've tried that and the original memory is OK. I've sent the new memory back to Crucial for replacement. Here's hoping, Vista really needs a lot more that the 1Gig supplied with the machine as standard.

Just to update this, it was the upgrade RAM that was at fault. Crucial (UK) replaced this and the new 2 GB works perfectly. This R61i is the low end machine (T2310 processor). The extra RAM (now 2.5GB total) makes a huge difference. Vista on 1GB was painful.
