RAM upgrade for R61

#1 Post by activoice » Sun Feb 17, 2008 3:06 pm

I own a Lenovo R61 model 7734, I haven't opened up the ram compartment yet, but from the specs it came with a 1gb stick of PC2-5300 ram. I was planning to add either 1 or 2 gb's in the remaining slot. (This model supports upto 3gb)

The Lenovo branded RAM is pretty pricey, so I was looking at these alternatives:

Is there something specific I should be looking for? Would one of these be a better choice than the others?

Kingston - KVR667D2S5

Crucial - RM12864AC667

OCZ - OCZ26671024VSO / OCZ2MV6672G

Corsair - VS1GSDS667D2 / VS2GSDS667D2

I would think any of them should work. I'd buy on price. If it don't work you can always send it back. Don't buy the Lenovo memory unless you like getting ripped off.

When I was looking into upgrading the memory in my R61 (7733) from the initial 1 stick of 1GB I did research by reading a lot of posts on these forums as it relates to the topic RAM. I came to the conclusion that Crucial was the best choice for me, the brand that I'd feel most confident in.

I got two Crucial 2GB (CT25664AC667) sticks from Newegg in December 2007 for $57.99 each with a $25 rebate on each stick (total $50 rebate, Crucial allows a limit of 2 rebates), so each 2GB stick was $32.99. Installed both sticks without a hitch, ran Memtest86+ (which is part of Ubuntun 7.10 iso) to make sure both sticks were okay, then clean installed Vista Business 64-bit with a dual-boot Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit. No problems with the OSes or the laptop so far, knock on wood. As I reinstalled the necessary/recommended drivers, Vista started to get slower after each driver reinstall so I did have to make some tweaks to Vista as to which processes to disable/turn-off to make it run faster. In the end, I'm happy with how things turned out.

I recommend looking into Crucial RAM, they are on sale now for $38.99 after $15 rebate on Newegg. Good luck.

Crucial is related to Micron, which is one of the remaining DRAM manufacturers.

The other remaining PC DRAM chip manufacturers are Samsung, Hynix (merged from Hyndai and LG) , Qmonda (was Infineon, Siemens). Elpida (merged from NEC & Hitach), Nanya, ProMOS, PowerChip.

Any other chip markings are private labels from these manufacturers.
