Hi all,
I have just become the proud new owner of a second-user ThinkPad Z60t. This is the first time that I have ever owned a laptop, having become quite experienced on desktops, and there are several questions that I would be very grateful if you guys could answer.
1) Temperatures.
I downloaded and installed NHC. When doing light work (not idling, though), CPU temperatures are 43-45C (notebook on desk) and 35-36C (when I lift back of laptop so fan intake is well ventilated).
When running prime95, (basically until the CPU temperature stabilised at 100% usage) then the temperature was around 81-82C (notebook on desk).
Hard drive reaches highest temperature of 43C.
Judging from previous posts, these temperatures are OK, right?
However, there is one other temperature related problem. The underside of the notebook feels rather warm. But warm is a relative term, and coming from the world of desktops, I don't know what is normal w/ regard laptops. The sources of heat seem to be directly under the touchpad (This is the RAM, if I'm looking at the serivce manual correclty). There is another source of heat on the underside, towards the left (heat vents) side. Again from the service manual I guess this is the CPU.
But the biggest heat source (sometimes hotter than the CPU area on the underside) comes from the middle of the laptop. I guess northbridge?
Basically I want to know if it is normal that the Z60t gets warm in these places on the underside.
2) Battery.
My battery has the "Battery error has occured, battery cannot be charged" message. I have tried power monitor "reset" function, and my battery is not recalled or eligible for a re-call (I tried this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 67765.html ) no go. My battery is two years old.
It looks like I'm going to have to get a new battery. Problem is that new 'genuine' lenovo ones are very expensive and that's not something I'm willing to spend. Are 'aftermarket' batteries like these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LAPTOP-BATTERY-IB ... m153.l1262 any good?
Finally....
This machine has had it's ram upgraded from 512 - 1G, and windows xp has been completely re-installed (and the recovery partition has been removed). Will all this void my warranty?
I'm very sorry for the long post, and I hope you guys can help me out.
Cheers,
Have a nice day,
Andy.

I do not own a Z60, but your temperatures sound about right, including the Prime95 numbers, based on my very limited knowledge of that program.Mr_Pilot wrote:Hi all,1) Temperatures.

Elevating the back of the computer is a good idea. I use velcro attached little feet thingies to get the back of the computer up about an inch and a half. It gets rid of most of the re-radiated heat from the desk surface, and gives me a better keyboard angle.
I can't comment about the warranty vs. operating system re-install, but others here may be of help.
Should your machine ever need to go into Lenovo, you might want to ask forum members about pulling the extra RAM ahead of shipping in case Lenovo service gets twitchy about it.
Barring a major hardware failure, Lenovo should never need to see the inside of your ThinkPad.
Keyboards, hard drives, and some other things are pretty easy for a home user to swap out anyway.
Lots of good help here from some sharp people.
