A21m no sound

#1 Post by w3dbj » Fri Feb 22, 2008 6:58 pm

Hello,

Just got my wife an A21 (well, she bought it at my prompting) and have setup XP on it. There is sound (beeps) when in the BIOS and the volume changes when using the volume keys. But in Windows, there is no sound, nada. The drivers are installed and no conflicts reported.

Anyone have any ideas?

Check the volume controls, be sure the device is installed and not muted.

Yeah, everything is installed - drivers, no conflicts, etc. Hardware test in XP passes but no audio out. The mute is off (checked settings in control panel, as well as the taskbar volume control etc.

When you go into Control Panel, and click on sound devices, then into properties, what are you getting?

You might try plugging an external speaker or head phones into the audio out jack to see if you have audio there.
If there is audio there, try inserting and removing the plug several times. That may clean the jack contacts and restore audio to the speakers.

Double-click the speaker icon on the Windows system tray to open the Master volume control.
Make sure none of the input sources are muted.
If that does not help, you might try to read what Lenovo has to say about audio problems on ThinkPad's.

Thanks everyone, tried everything listed here. The hardware test passes but still no sound. The only thing I haven't tried is using headphones, as I don't have anything with the mini adapter...

Is it a card inside, or part of the mainboard?

The card is the part of the main board...

One last thing to try: borrow or download a copy of Linux "live" CD and see what happens there...

Good luck.

I don't know how relevant it is but xpsp2 was notorious for turning off mb sound happened to me once on a desktop there were numerous mb switches I had to turn on check ms knowledge base and search sp2 no audio. linux disc should tell you if it's the os.
