Z61t recommended OS - XP Pro or Vista
Z61t recommended OS - XP Pro or Vista
I just bought a new Z61t off of ebay. The notebook came loaded with Vista Home Premium. The notebook has a CORE DUO T5500 1.66GHz processor with 2 gb ram and a 120 gb 5400 rpm hard drive.
I'm not a big fan of Vista from past experience (on a notebook) because of the extended startup and shutdown times.
Since this notebook isn't exactly cutting edge performance should I replace the OS with XP Pro? Are there any issues with this notebook running either OS that I should be aware of?
Thanks for your help.

I am running Vista Business on my new Z61t. Do a clean install, there is an excellent guide over on Notebookreview.com. Also, 2GB of RAM helps a lot also. Boot up times are as fast or faster that any XP machine I've ever owned. I am running most of the Thinkvantage utilities on startup with no detrimental effects.
Go fast or go home

Vista Home Premium is a great program. XP is fast with 2 GB...but Vista is really fine with 3 or 4 GB. You also have all the AV features including compatibility with TV tuners.
Bump up your memory and perhaps think about a faster and larger HD. I wish Lenovo upgraded to Vista Home Premium instead of Vista Business...but hey, it was free when I got my machine.
Put the memory in first...it is really cheap.

Depends on your memory installed. If you have both slots full, you need to replace one or two RAM chips. If you have two 1GB chips, pull one and replace it with a 2GB. If you go to
http://www.crucial.com
it will identify your memory being used and recommend replacements.
You only add memory if you have an empty slot...and that would be a 2GB module.
You can max the Z61t out to 4GB, but Windows Vista 32bit only sees 3GB. I went to 4GB and it works fine.
Good luck...Bill
