Upon starting my computer, a box with the line
"error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\NVMCTRAY.DLL the specified module could not be found"
came up and my screen background is black.
Any ideas on what I should do to correct this?
Thanks so much,
Sarah English

Are you able to boot into windows at all? At least safe mode? You might have to reinstall your graphics drivers ...

The thinkpad in your signature tells us that you've a thinkpad R61i with Intel X3100 (a video card) but the error you're getting is due to another video card (nVidia), I think either you installed wrong drivers or for some reason your thinkpad came with wrong drivers installed from the factory or your system is infecting with a spyware.
You can correct either of the problems by installing the right drivers from lenovo's website or running a good spyware utility.
In addition, try this:
My Computer > Run > type in (In Windows Vista type in the search box) "msconfig" (without quotes) > Startup > uncheck "NVMCTRAY" (if available) > Press ok > restart your machine.
Some info about nvmctray.dll :
http://www.file.net/process/nvmctray.dll.html
The following page talks about remedy of this spyware however I don't suggest you to install it unless you're 100% sure you're infected with one:
