Added Memory - BSOD

#1 Post by Mike Phillips » Mon Mar 03, 2008 2:33 pm

My A30 (2652 - PIII) came with only 256MB of memory. It was a surprise to learn that this computer, a PIII, was capable of 1GB of memory. So, I order two 512MB modules from bzboyz.com. The specs are 512MB PC133 133Mhz SDRAM SODIMM 32x16 8C Notebook Memory Modules, SKU 19165. According to the seller, they are low density modules that are compatible with all Thinkpads.

When the computer boots, after the Windows desktop is loaded, it gets a blue screen of death with a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA error. When I boot with either module individually, the computer boots fine, and it displays the correct amount of memory (512MB).

According to the research I have done, the most likely suspect is improperly matched memory modules. Are there any other likely causes? Solutions?

Low density modules has the highest device loading, 16 chips each module. 32 chip may be close to the highest capacitive loading the MB can drive. Originally IBM checked out the compatibility of the modules they sold but these modules you have could be slightly higher in loading.

So just use one 16 device 512MB and one 8 devices 256MB modules.
