Migrate to another Thinkpad

#1 Post by linuxcomputers » Mon Mar 17, 2008 9:45 am

I'm using the A20m to type this, I moved the hard-drive from the 570e to this for the moment. I probably need to re-install to get the graphics server to configure right. Mandriva-Linux lets you do that when Windows won't.
I have incorporated a company called linuxcomputersolutions Ltd (Number 6376832). Any computers that go through my hands get Mandriva-Linux fitted. I own a A20m 500MHz, 320Mb, 40Gb and a 800MHz T21 that has 384Mb SDRAM Without a HD or a working screen

Just install the video driver for the 570. Also the NIC driver. Also the sound driver. There is no difference between Windows and Linux in this respect - you need the hardware drivers for your machine. You may possibly need BIOS and EC as well, but I don't know that for sure. ... JDH

I went to the trouble of moving the hard-drive and now its failed, it was hanging before it would boot, so the signs were there.

The one thing that Windows falls on it's face at when moving a drive is the chipset. If the driver needed for accessing the hard drive changes, it fails to boot. There is something called "sysprep" to get around this.

On Linux, the only thing that isn't redetected at every bootup is usually just the graphics server. Of course, it drops you at a command line if that fails, which one may or may not consider useful depending on whether they know the command to redetect the video.

The chipset problem Windows has is a paranoid security feature. The registry keeps a record of the CPU serial number and the configuration of the computer.
