G41 USB Port issue.

#1 Post by Atomo » Mon Mar 24, 2008 5:17 pm

I work on a ThinkPad G41 (3881 3AU) for a relative and it seems to have developed an issue with the USB ports.

The only USB port that will currently work correctly is the front one on the side. All others will not work at all.

When a device is plugged into the non functional port the system tray will say the USB device is not recognizable and will not begin charging the device (in the case of the Creative Zen Micro, a Logitec Cordless Mouse and HP Printer are also devices connected to the laptop).

I have gone through all the troubleshooting on the IBM support page.
I have run all the Windows Update suggested upgrades and updated every IBM file and firmware I could get my mitts on.
Other devices have been tested with the ports and also do not work.

Is there something that can be done short of a system wipe or cracking the case and re soldering the connections?
Just maintaining a G41.

You probably tried it already, but delete all the ports from the device manager, restart and have windows reinstall them.

Also, try a linux live cd to test to see if the ports are indeed physically bad, or just a software glitch in the windows OS.
