Can an R50e use high-res LCD panels?

#1 Post by rek » Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:24 pm

I have an opportunity to buy an R50e very cheaply, albeit with a damaged 15" 1024x768 screen. Nevermind, as my intention would be to replace the panel with a 1400x1050 or 1600x1200 Flexview.

However, unlike most other R50s, the R50e uses Intel integrated graphics, and doesn't seem to have ever been sold with anything other than a 1024x768 panel.

Has anyone had any experience with these and installing higher resolution panels? Does it work?

I have the combination sitting here, haven't tried it yet.

Supposedly there were some Intel-based T43's that came with SXGA, or so I heard.

I'll actually try it sometime in the next few days.

Hello,

I have an R50e 14.1" in need of an LCD.

I have tried a working screen from a T40p (hi-res) and also a screen from a T42 with no joy at all, though the R50e machine boots as normal to external monitor.

Someone suggested it may be a BIOS limitation of the 'e' models?

I'll be looking up the part numbers in more detail, over the next few days hopefully......

It would be good to know if this issue was ever resolved.

Many Thanks,
Arnold

R50e's have similar graphics chipsets to Intel GPU based R51's.

I can confirm that Intel GPU based R51's DO NOT support SXGA+ or UXGA displays. I swapped entire assemblies (cable, inverter, LCD) and only the backlights illuminated, no pictures at all.

It is not a graphics chipset limitation, but a BIOS or EC limitation. Intel clearly states that 1600 x 1200 is supported with the 855 chipset.

I doubt the R50e BIOS/EC would provide support for either.

If that were a BIOS limitation (i.e. compare against a white-list), perhaps fellow TPF-er Zender may be able to modify the BIOS.

FYI: an R52 with Intel GPU can support SXGA+. Funnily enough, the almost equal T43 with Intel GPU can NOT.

R50e will NOT work with anything but a 1024x768

I have yet to figure out what the exact issue is, but something somewhere is, for a fact, disabled.

The same goes for 14" T43 with Intel boards...

Any news on this? I've got hold of a broken R50p. But the display is fine, and i'd really like implant it on the R50e.
