R40 Problem: Slow drive access

#1 Post by agonggo » Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:37 pm

Hi,

I've been having a problem with my R40. Drive access is very slow when it is connected to the network either by wire or wireless. It takes about 2 minutes before it starts to open a file!! The whole thing just freezes until the file is open. But if I disconnect from the network, everything goes back to normal.

Any idea on what is wrong?

Thanks.

Slow drive (4200rpm) perhaps.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Slow as in it takes 2-5 minutes before the HD decides to open a program. The whole OS freezes in the meantime.

This happens only when the notebook is connected to a network (WIFI or wired.)

BTW, I am using a 5200rpm HD.

Thanks.

Do you have the NICs set to off when switching in AC? Another words, when you switch to wired, do you set the wireless NIC to off and vice-versa?

Do you have any network drive mapped but not connected?

Do you clean the internet file cache once in a while?

Hi,

II connect only on wired LAN now. I have turned off wireless LAN. Either way I still have a problem. I never run them at the same time.

I have no mapped drive. I have removed that when trying to trace the problem. And my internet cache is clean.

Thanks,
Chris

Is your drive or the one you are connecting to on the network in PIO mode? The PIO mode property lives in the IDE or like drive controller and, if set, can really slow down a drive. ... JDH

My drive is using DMA mode. I don't think the problem is the HD. I have defragged my HD, cleaned the registry, and uninstalled unnecessary programs. I can't figure out why the HD access slows down only when I connect to the network.

When I'm not in the network, drive access is very fast. When I connect to the network either wired or wifi or both, my computer freezes for a few minutes (2-5min) before it starts to access the drive and run a program. The program would run fine until I open another program and the whole thing freezes again.

I have already removed all my mapped network drives and have installed the latest drivers (network card, IDE controller, etc.). It is my R40 that is having this problem. My T61 doesn't have this problem. My R40 has 1.25GB RAM and an 80GB (5400rpm) HDD.

Thanks,
Chris
