Z60 Battery not holding a charge, other problems afoot
Z60 Battery not holding a charge, other problems afoot
The other day I was surfing the internet in my living room and got distracted, leaving the laptop to die on my coffee table. I've accidentally done this before a couple times but been able to plug in the AC adapter and just recharge the battery until things were back to normal. However, such was not the case this time.
When I plugged the adapter in to recharge I noticed that the battery light under the monitor was blinking orange- no surprise here. But when my computer booted up I noticed that Power manager display on my taskbar said that my battery was around 38% charged. Odd. I hovered my mouse over the display and the little window popped up saying that it would be a mere 49 hours before the battery would be fully charged. Very odd. I
I let my computer charge for a few hours and noticed that the battery light under my monitor was still blinking orange and the power manager said I was now 39% charged. When I disconnected the adapter the computer just shut off.
This was two days ago, and I've been using my computer since then, but only when it is plugged into the wall. The computed is noticeably slower and any audio/video playback is choppy. And to top everything off, when I was booting up the computer this morning it let out a big beep and I got a message on the screen saying "0192: System security- Embedded security hardware tamper detected"
Anybody know what might be going on here?

This exact thing happened to my wife's Z60m last night. She left the laptop on, the battery died, and when we plugged it back up, we got the orange blinking light. We even got the embedded security hardware warning when it powered back on. I believe the battery is just shot. I'm shopping for a new one as I type.

You're not supposed to completely deep discharge lithium ion battery.
Discharge methods quoted from Battery University.Battery University wrote:Some lithium-ion batteries feature an ultra-low voltage cut-off that permanently disconnects the pack if a cell dips below 1.5V. A very deep discharge may cause the formation of copper shunt, which can lead to a partial or total electrical short. The same occurs if the cell is driven into negative polarity and is kept in that state for a while.
Manufacturers rate the lithium-ion battery at an 80% depth of discharge. Repeated full (100%) discharges would lower the specified cycle count. It is therefore recommended to charge lithium-ion more often rather than letting it discharge down too low. Periodic full discharges are not needed because lithium-ion is not affected by memory.
Lithium and lead-based batteries do not require a periodic full discharge. In fact, it is better not to discharge them too deeply but charge them more often. Using a larger battery is one way to reduce the stress on a battery.

You guys probably have the recalled batteries. The same thing happened to me as well, and IBM replaced it. Go to http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ATT-LENOVO
