R51 what a machine

#1 Post by sentosa » Mon Mar 31, 2008 2:04 am

Ive upgraded from a R30 to a r51 machine. wwo what a difference.
the R30 ran all hot and bothered all the time with the fan doing a marry dance "on " Off" all the time . The machine seemed to be
very thermaly stresed.

The R51 is cool a cucumber , Its like driveing a V6 after you been in a turbo 4
The R51 is a 1.6 mhz centrino chip. any members views and info on the R51 would be great to share.

Not exactly a "rocket" but the R51 is a good solid unit, for sure. Mine was bought for a bargain price with no operating system. I put XP on it, and then later installed Vista.

Vista will run well but without the silly Aero effect for best performance.

Nice keyboard and great high res screen, too.

Well its a hell of a lot faster than my 770 ED i was useing 3 months ago. Got my R51 for $320 US with XP pro on it . It also had a COA
sticker on it.
the unit was a Ex leas machine from asia , The asian students bring them into the country and sell them on "Trademe" it is a auction site here in new zealand. Its like ebay but without all the fees.
they have a lot of I B M gear. Have a look , here is link
http://www.trademe.co.nz

Ive got all my laptops from it. Well back to the R51. ive only got 512 meg ram do you think going to 1 gig will improve performance ?
I hope the machine is not fussy about its ram , I purchassed 512 meg ram ship for my R30 but it did not like it. Just shut down on start up.

Cheers for now, By the way what programs you like running on your unit.

RAM is pretty inexpensive these day, so I suggest going for the max, which is 2 gig for that machine. It is well worth the investment! Big speed difference. If you can, also plug in a 7200 rpm hard drive for improved performance. Another worthy upgrade would be the Ultra Bay hard drive adapter, which is highly useful for backups and/or multimedia files. It just plugs into the CD drive slot and is super handy.

Crucial is a good place to get ram if they ship to NZ. Good quality and fair prices. (At least in the US)

Update: They do. I fixed the link.

I had the same problem with my R30. I finally opened it up to see. All there was between the CPU and the heatsink was what looked like a piece of clear tape with dark lines in it. About the same thickness as a piece of tape too. I replaced that with some thermal grease. The idle temperature only dropped a few degrees, but the biggest benefit was that the temp didn't immediately jump whenever I did something (causing the "merry on/off dance" of the fan).

The R30 fan seemed to be mostly run by how much load your placeing on the main cpu. so it would cycle on off as you ran different applcations.
Im not saying the r30 is a bad machine it was just running on the limit
of what temparature electronics can handle
