Strange heat/CPU changes after running A31p on battery

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Mon Apr 07, 2008 6:24 am

So last night I took one of my "spare" A31p machines (2653-R4U, stock with P4M 2.0 CPU, 60/7200 HDD and 1Gb RAM, Ralink wi-fi card), put it on my lap and used it for 45 minutes until the battery started dying...

This is (was?) the coolest running out of all my A31p units, idles at 36 C and rarely goes over 1.2 CPU speed in XP.

After plugging in the charger and letting it sit for a few hours, this morning the machine won't go under 60 C idling and is constantly at the maximum CPU speed and load.

Ideas, anyone?

Hello, by maximum load, do you mean that the windows task manager is constantly showing 100% load? If this is the case, I recommend trying the process manager which will do much better job than the original windows task manager in identifing what's causing the continuous load.

I'm sorry if I'm getting this wrong 8)

What I was referring to was what Speedswitch XP was showing me...which is probably pretty much the same.

On the good side, the machine is back to its normal self. I've turned it on when I've come home and it's been on for about 8 hours now, purring and behaving wonderfully.

The not-so-good side is that I have absolutely no clue what has happened and what can trigger it to happen again...will report on progress or lack thereof...

It's not uncommon for a process to hang up and consume 100% CPU resources/utilization. Just keep an eye on task manager next time and note which process is holding down the CPU. 'Process Explorer' is a good idea if it works, never used it.

Fresh install of XP, very lean, no bloatware. No spyware no viruses.
