A22m CPU upgrade question

#1 Post by synchromesh » Sat Apr 12, 2008 2:45 pm

My parents are using an A22m I built for them. In fact, I'm using it as I type. It's a good machine with some upgrades such as 512MB RAM, DVDROM, 32GB 5400 rpm hard disk (2 platter IBM!), etc.

The question I have is about a processor upgrade for this system. It currently has an 800MHz P3 that came with it. I have a 1GHz (100fsb, of course) proc sitting at home. So I was wondering, if I swap the CPU in this machine for the 1GHz processor, will the stock heatsink be sufficient? 1GHz seems to run hotter than the 800MHz one. I managed to salvage a mirrored T22 heatsink to use with it but it's obviously useless since A-series heatsink design is different from the T-series.

Aside from that, I'm sure someone has experience swapping these processors into the A2x systems. Anything else to watch out for in general?

There are only a few MB that will use the 900Mhz and 1Ghz Coppermines CPUs.

These are the 2629-xxx A22p, 2628-Sxx and 2628-Txx A22m. The 2628-Sxx with 15 inch SXGA+ LCD were originally spec'ed for 900Mhz but they will work correctly with an 1Ghz CPU. Others will only go to 800/850Mhz.

The 900Mhz/1Ghz Coppermines called for 34W thermal design so run very hot. Nevertheless they seem to be very reliable.

Theirs is a 2628-PSU. That means it won't work with the 1GHz CPU?

I don't believe so.

Well, this most certainly spoils my plans. Oh well. Any ideas what this processor is worth today with a T22 heatsink included?

What is the number on the 1Ghz CPU?
R61i, R40, A31(2), A30, T23 (2), A22M, i1200, Wireless Linksys LAN

SL5TF. It works well in most T2x series because I upgraded my uncle's T21 with the same number CPU + T22 fan and it has been working well for him for several months now.

To make a T22 work full speed with 900Mhz/1Ghz CPUs, you need FRU 26P8098 MB. Same situation with A22p, A22ms:

T22, 26P8098 (XGA, SXGA+)
A22p, 26P8103 (UXGA)
A22m, 26P8102 (XGA), 26P8104 (SXGA+)

There are other compatible MB with different FRUs.

Is there a way to find out mobo FRU without taking the machine apart?

The MB FRU number is under the communication card or DIMM slot on most models.

do you even know if my a20m (fru 08K3125) accepts a p3 850 mhz cpu?

it runs only with 700 mhz ...
