R30 RAM Getting Very Hot!

#1 Post by AlexDBall » Sun Apr 20, 2008 4:49 pm

Hey guys, i've hot an R30 that i put together out of 3 R30's (monitor from one/board from another e.tc)

The system runs fine for its age but i've found out today that after the system had been on for about 2 hours (windows/application installation e.t.c) the memory cover was extremely hot!

I took it apart and threw in some other modules i had from an A30 (2x256MB 133MHz) and still they were heating up alot!.

Has this happened to anyone else out there?
I'll put together the other mainboard i have to see if it still happens..

TIA!

Hi AlexDBall,

I am running with one 512 & one 256 sticks, the cover is warm, but I would not consider it hot. I run my ThinkPad from a port replicatior (the first version) that tends to put the laptop on slight angle and thus allows more space for cooling. If you are running on a soft surface (i.e. tablecloth) that could increase the temperature.
Personally, I find the wireless cover the warmest (even without a wireless card) but I have upgraded to a 7200 hard disk, which could be hotter.

There is a tool written by someone that calls themselves hexmagic. I will not tell you the temperature of your memory, but it will give you that information for your CPU, HDD and system board. The tool is called MobileMeter you can get it from here

(the site is in Japanese, the actual file link is: http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValle ... mm0310.zip)
Currently my computer has been on for over 12 hours and my system temperatures are (cpu = 40, MB = 41, HHD 43), room temp 20, I have a few programs sitting in memory (700MB) and just typing this message.

Is your CPU a Celeron? These are known to be hot, especially older ones. And heat travels...

Most of the machines that I know of get quite a bit of heat in RAM department, hence heat spreaders on more expensive sticks...

hey guys, thanks for the quick response!
ajkula66: Is your CPU a Celeron? These are known to be hot, especially older ones. And heat travels...
No, its not a celeron. Its an PIII @ 1Ghz. cpu & mobo temperatures are reasonable (35-40 degrees in celcius) and the HDD is around 45.

I actually use it on a port replicator (must be the 1st version) and thats when i noticed the increased temperature when a pen went under the laptop and i went to take it out :)

I'm waiting for an IR thermometer which i order for another system (T41 GPU reflow  ) and i will see how much the temperature of the memory is (it is very hot!) and i'll let you know
