R51 external display

I have an R51 with the external display port which I have hooked up to a Panasonic projector. Recently when changing to on screen and projector setting the display on the projector flickers and is unreadable. I tried every setting I could but still the same. S video connection works without flickering but is not clear even after adjusting the projector. I wanted to try an external monitor to test it but dont have one. I did have another R51 and swapped hard drives and that R51 works fine on the projector so I am assuming that the onboard video for external display is done. Does that sound correct?
