A31 upgrade to wirelss

#1 Post by OMNIBUS » Thu May 29, 2008 2:22 am

hallo
i have an A31 with this situation:
ethernet device with a ethernet daughter card;
modem device with modem daughter card;
1 minipci slot empty;
i would install bluetooth and wireless how i could do so?
i dn't know if bluetooth needs antenna or what and if any mini pci wireless card support even the rj 45 device for ethernet with cable?
i thought 2 solution but i don't know if are right..somebody could help me?
1) solution
buying a bdc with modem type 2 i saw on ebay does it work in A31? (IBM Bluetooth III+56k Modem Daughter Card (BMDC200) . It uses Actiontec bluetooth chip integrated with IBM Integrated 56K modem V.90, Support BT1.2 and backward compatible with BT1.1)and buying the "Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Mini-PCI Adapter" for wireless keeping the edc in the pc..does it work? i need only to connect the 2 antennas and insert winxp cd for drivers? or what?
2) solution
buying the Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Mini-PCI Adapter and if it does work with my system even for ethernet device rj 45 for cable, i remove the edc and put the connector to the wireless adapter connecting the antennas that i saw in an other topic how to put back of the lid; then using the empty edc slot for a simple bdc (i'd need an antenna?)
insert win xp cd and installing drivers
whic one of these is the best solution? or what i have to do to get bluetooth , wireless, modem and ethernet cable with my A31?
thankyou to all
angelo

Normally you would remove the modem and install BT CDC in its place. A small antenna with a short lead works well enough.

The miniPCI slot would be used for the wireless card. If your cover does have antennae already, then you have to install antennae in the cover.

I used the correct Bluetooth CDC.

Antenna is this one:

I normally leave in the original ethernet CDC (RJ45). So the machine would be without a modem.

I'm surprised to be here after all these years with my A31p 2653-R9U. I'm not sure when I joined but I feel that I've missed a tremendous resource for my TP. On well, I'm here now.

I have been considering changing the Intel Wireless LAN and modem to gain the additional wi-fi 11a/g, etc. however have not had much luck finding a replacement mPCI card. My box has the Bluetooth CDC, ethernet CDC and the combo mPCI adapter with 11b only.

What might I do to maintain the present state of the machine with a more advanced wi-fi capability? Thanks!

Most Atheros AR5001x based cards will give you 11abg functionality and fairly easy to install. For intel you want a 2200 card. You will lose the modem in most cases.

Never tried the BMDC200 in A31 simply due to the fact that I never use the modem at home.

I have the BMDC200 in my old T41 for work and do use it once in a while on the road.

I used Atheros mostly because they were more plentiful and usually pretty cheap. They were the first to support 11a.

I'm willing to purchase two cards if I can retain the modem for my fax software. Have you seen a reasonable place in USA to make these purchases?

BTW, thanks for thinking ahead with me!
