Are these chips applicable to upgrading the A31p series?

I doubt it, between "Enhanced Speed Step" and SSE3 implementations on these chips, I'd guess that even if it worked with older chipsets and was socket compatible, the ThinkPad would need a BIOS update to even recognize the chip (which IBM won't be putting out)

The article is referring to use of Prescott Pentium 4 desktop parts, but I suspect that the mobile parts will probably run hotter than their Northwood Pentium 4 counterparts.

So even if the BIOS on the A series was compatible with Prescott, I wouldn't recommend installing one.
