How to install WLAN antenna for R40e? Help!

#1 Post by CaseyDiamond » Thu Jun 05, 2008 7:08 pm

I bought an Atheros wifi mini-pci card (AR5005Gs) for my R40e and it boots fine--no bios problems.

But I'm having troubles finding the info on how to install an internal antenna!

1) I don't see any connection points on the card. Is this because I don't see the connections, or is it because I bought the wrong darn card--and I need to get one that has connectors?

2) If I did buy a card that will work, how does it connect to an antenna? And do I just buy the antenna wires from ebay?

Maybe someone has a diagram or guide sheet or can offer some help? I'd really like to get rid of my full-size PCI card sticking out the side of my Thinkpad!

TIA!!!!!!

Okay....it looks like I made a rash purchase. My R40e doesn't seem to have pre-installed antenna wires, and it looks like there's only a few mini-lan cards that are going to work well in this laptop.

Can someone help me out here? I don't need a super-incredible wifi set-up . . . just something decent that'll connect to access points that are pretty strong and close by me. (I'm okay with sticking to my full-size PCI card, but I'd prefer an internal set-up)

So.....is anyone pretty familiar with this process: what budget card should I buy, from where, and what's an easy set-up routine?--so I don't have to get all crazy tearing apart my LCD. I'm sure there's a low-price card, and an antenna I can just run under the main board. But I could use a veteran to help me make the right choices.

THANKS!!!!!!!!

In thread I posted antenna installation procedure for an A3x. You can get the jest of doing it in your R40e.

TIA!

Only the oldest 11b cards may not support WPA. All 11g cards should.

Any people know a manufacture and model for a card that will work, aside from the IBM-branded ones (too pricey)???

I can do the bios hack.......I'm just struggling to find a very simple thing:

Manufacture and model of a minipci card with WPA and antenna connectors for my R40e. Guess I'll just wait until someone stumbles on this thread.............
