My A31 external antenna mod.....LOOK.

#1 Post by Excalibur418 » Mon Jun 09, 2008 8:52 pm

Most A31 models have a S-video input as well as output. Fortunately, mine did not have the S-video input option, but IBM was kind enough to leave a "dummy" port in its place. If you have the HMM. just remove the keyboard, keyboard bezel, and the Ulttrabay on the right side of the laptop. That Ultrabay is the one that sits on top of the mini pci area. When the laptop is exposed, you can see the port from the inside to get your bearings. I started off by drilling a pilot hole with a 1/16" drill bit. Next, I used a dremel to bore the hole out a little for the connector I was using...in this case its a RP-SMA. You kinda have to work the connector in there, but its not that hard, just take your time. My RP-SMA connector had to nuts with it. Its ideal because that what holds your connector in place. One nut on either side of the laptop wall. I used a little ( and I mean little ) black RTV to keep the outside nut from turning and becoming loose in the future. With the Ultrabay outta the way, just route your Hirose connector for the mini pci card. MAIN or AUX, take your pic, its only gonna use one anyways. Call me whack or a lunatic, but it works. I get much more signal than before. My internal antennas may have been damaged or pinched from the previous owner, no way of knowing. Sorry for the crappy pic..but you get the idea. I chose the RP-SMA because of the wide variety of antenna choices. For Wardriving, get one of those antennas that has the magnetic base to stick on the outside of your car.LOL. This post is just my .02 cents worth.

Nice work.

Only the A30p/A31p has the S-Video input port. Here is the internal antenna approach.
