R50 Video Issue

#1 Post by Harryc » Tue Jun 10, 2008 6:37 pm

I've got a new (to me) R50 with flashing multicolored vertical bars (or stripes) on the LCD. Does it on boot and I never see the boot screen. I reseated the LCD cable and pushed down on the GPU with the machine open with no effect on the problem. I'm thinking GPU. The LCD worked perfectly for maybe 5 minutes until this occurred. Now no matter what I do the problem occurs. Any ideas?

Does it do the same on external monitor as well? I know you'd have checked, just asking ...

GPU in my opinion.

I would think vertical bars on LCD should be LCD issue. The interface to LCD is byte oriented so it will be random pattern if GPU is bad. Check with an external monitor is a good idea.

Thanks for the tips guys. I changed a BIOS option for primary display and now I can't get it to fail. So, I'll stress test it for a few days to see how it goes. I'll post back if I find anything.

What was the version you updated from and to? Just for future reference.

Vic, I didn't flash the BIOS, I just changed the parameter for primary display from Thinkpad LCD to VGA+LCD and it started working. It could have been coincidental I suppose . I changed the option back and it's still working. I did notice that the BIOS is way downlevel so I may flash it anyway...but weird eh? I also did have the machine mostly apart and put it back together again, so it is also possible I inadvertently fixed a loose connection. It's been running since last night with zero issues.

I misread and skipped over "option". I think you're right and must have confirmed a connection or you have the "midas touch"!!

Well, it took 2 days to fail, but it finally did. I was seeing the vertical bars on both the internal and on an external LCD. I am guessing that I am looking at a systemboard replacement. Any different ideas?
