Broken rollcage on R60, any ideas?

#1 Post by lukaszsw » Sun Jun 22, 2008 2:12 pm

I've recently got a new T60 and I was preparing my old R60 (well it wasn't that old) for sale.
I decided to find out why the lid was so wobbly (loose or whatever). After dismantling the keyboard bezel it became obvious that the cage is broken (I was hoping for a loose screw). This little part near the fan is separated from the rest. Come to think of it I was working like this for a year or more (or maybe it came that way). It was my first laptop and I had no idea how should the hinges react

My dad just tried to glue it. We'll see in 24 hours but I doubt this will hold (maybe it will hold until I sell the machine =)
Anyone had the same problem? Do I need to replace the rollcage? Is it worth it?

I've seen a break in the same area on a customer's R61. I had to buy a new rollcage and bottom casing, they were about $45 + shipping each from Lenovo.

I would say that it's well worth it. If you leave it like that, the casing would be vulnerable to flexing, and can cause future problems.

I've seen this once, the poor R61 was in a not so expensive bag with minimal padding lying on the roof of a Honda Civic as the owner then drove off.
After seeing the bag had sucummed to the forces of acceleration and gravity in their rear view mirror they were able to stop and retrieve their ThinkPad which works fine, but is a little broken in the same corner.

I agree with jamiphar, it is worth replacing the rollcage to prvent flexing.

ps. while you're at it, you could give that fan a clean

I had the same problem on my R60 in similar place (between fan and VGA out). In service they changed frame for a new one :) (in warranty)

My dad digged it out of company storage and the warranty was out 7 month after I got it (and 7 month ago). Thank God my new T61 came with 3 year warranty

Ok, I guess the new rollcage for 45$ wasn't a bad idea but guess what - the glue holds =))) Its called UHU plus btw. =)

But the bad thing (apart from me not mentioning the fault on ebay later on) is that the screen still wobbles pretty much!? I've heard that its a common problem. Yet the hinges doesn't look any different form T61. Thats sucks but then again it was like this all the time I was using it.
