R51 hard drive compatiblity issue

#1 Post by leah » Sun Dec 19, 2004 10:39 am

Hi everyone,

I just got an R51, and I'm trying to install a 60GB Hitacha Travelstar hard drive in the main hard drive slot. (I originally bought the drive for my R32 where it worked fine.) For whatever reason, when I go to do a original software recovery to get the 60GB to function as the 40GB does, it doesn't recognize that the HD is installed. Also, I can't seem to find the hard drive information in the bios to even see if the bios is detecting it.

If anyone has any ideas, that would be really helpful. I'd rather not resort to calling IBM tech support unless I have to. While they're better than Dell tech support, I still would rather not waste my time dealing with first-level support.

Thanks everyone!
Leah

Issue resolved

#2 Post by leah » Sun Dec 19, 2004 11:13 am

Hi all,

Well, my husband solved the problem. (I feel pretty silly about this.)

Apparently the metal heat shield is a couple of millimeters larger for the R32 than the one for th R51 so the pins were not making contact.

Problem resolved...I hope this will help other people!

Best regards,
Leah
