Strange Highlighting with R61

We have several R61 Thinkpads in our firm. I have noticed that at times when the user is using Excel that when they move the mouse many cells are highlighted. I checked to make sure that ClickLock is not checked within the mouse settings. Also when they try to use the numeric keypad it does not work even though NumLocks is on

If we press Shfit+Ctrl keys or reboot the computer everything returns to normal. We use a PS/2 keyboard connected to the port replicator with a Microsoft wheel USB mouse. I have loaded the latest mouse drivers. These R61s replaced A31s with Windows 2000 and we never had this problem, only with the R61 and Windows XP.

I am beginning to think that maybe the PS/2 keyboard could be the problem because Lenovo's website states that the R61 does not support an externa PS/2 keyboard but the port replicator does have this connection.

Any suggestions on what to do or try would be appreciated.
