Screen stays lit when lid is closed?

#1 Post by pt1209 » Thu Jul 31, 2008 10:32 am

I had to replace the LCD screen on my ThinkPad
R40 Model#2681CU1, I was able to get a complete working LCD (already assembled with vid harness and antenna wires intact) replacing the LCD went smoothly and all is fine EXCEPT when the lid is closed the LCD stays lit, I checked in my Configuration/Power Options/Advanced and it is set to go into "Standby" mode "When I cllose the lid". Is there a setting somewhere else I'm missing or is there a switch of some sort I missed in reassembling my Thinkpad R40??

Bingo!! That was the culprit sarbin.. BUT it the problem was self inflicted!! Seems somehow I broke the little metal piece that extends down from the bezel switch button to the actual switch. I found the little broken "L" shaped piece when I took the laptop apart again to investigate the switch. Can the bezel switch be replaced?? In it's design it looks like that little switch/button is integrated onto the keyboard bezel... anyone run into this problem?

well, looking at the r40 hmm, here: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 3n6183.pdf
it's not clear at all from the keyboard bezel removal pages (103-105) or from the parts exploded view and parts list pages (starting on 144) whether the switch is integral to or discrete from the bezel itself.

sorry i can't offer more...

sarbin I have had the results looking online, seems that it's going to be impossible to track down just the button part. I'm trying to think of a home solution such as gluing a small plastic piece to the button since there is not way to reattach the thin metal extension back onto the button, problem is what kind of glue would adhere the metel underside of the button to a small plastic block??

don't know about what kind of glue will adhere metal to plastic. maybe you could find, or fashion, a similar sized piece of plastic and glue that on? then i'd think that superglue would do the trick.

your other option is to just use fn-f4 or fn-f12 to suspend or hibernate before closing the lid. i know it's not as convenient as simply closing the lid, but... it's guaranteed to work.

If nothing else, you can set the software switch to do nothing, and then if you wish, standby manually (Start, Shut down -> Standby), and then close the lid. The only downside is you need to remember to press Fn when you open the lid. My switch is missing as well.

The piece is an "L" shaped spring. The HMM doesn't give a clue to the underside. The spring end with the two holes are meant for two pegs that are "melted" on. I have a spare keyboard bezel (R40) that I can provide pictures from or pm for more details.

I was thinking super glue also.
I've been doing the Fn F12 hibernate thing I'm just afraid of someone forgetting and closing the lid for hours(Fn F3 standby would be better but I've already had a few instances where "FnF3 Standby didn't hold and the keyboard was pretty warm).
Vanya pic woould help GREATLY!! TY, I'll pm you,,
