The A31p is such a nice machine.

I got one at work after my Toshiba Sattelite Pro 6200 broke down all the time. It was such a relief. Pitty I had to hand it over when I left the company.

Okay, time to pump it up!

#214 Post by dwilsonfl » Thu Oct 02, 2008 8:21 pm

Hi guys, I wound up the winner of the R51, and am ready to start pumping it up.

I've got 2 gig of RAM on the way.
Looking at CD/DVD drives
Got a dock on the way
May clone the drive in my t41 (7200 rpm) and drop a 5400 in it and move the faster drive into the R51.

I have a SL6FA 1.6 cpu here, will that work as an upgrade to the 1.6 Pentium M?

sound like a plan?

The SL6FA 1.6Ghz is a 1Mb L2 cache CPU which would make it a Banias processor.

Unless you have a Celeron equipped R51, the processor in it should be a Dothan with a 2Mb L2 cache, so that'd be a downgrade.

Are you sure of that? I was convinced that all R50/p/51 with PM CPUs were Banias-powered...

Parts lookup for that machine tells us - 26P8483 MICROASSEMBLY FRU, BANIAS 1.6GHZ. Any Dothan 1.6 or higher would be an upgrade.

I'll be on the hunt for perhaps 1.7 or a little better, then. Thanks!

Thinkwiki page for the R51 indicates that some came with Dothans. I don't have a tawbook handy so can't check with that to verify what Thinkwiki says.

Well, I've just learned something new...yes, some of them were shipped with Dothans according to HMM, but the one in question wasn't...

Now I'd love for someone to explain to me why Dothan was never offered on an otherwise top-spec'd R50p...

I haven't had time to check to be sure, but I'd bet that it was a time-frame issue. The R50s were probably out of production by the time the Dothans came on line, which is probably why there was a changeover part way through the R51 production cycle.

You've got it.

R50's roughly equate to T41's, neither had Dothans. The R50p and T41p had the fastest Banias ever made, 1.7GHz.

R51's roughly equate to T42's, many had Dothans (some R51's also had Celerons).

Almost every Banias or Dothan CPU will work in either, but I have noticed that the Intel-GPU BIOS for the R51's will support most or all of the latest C-stepping Dothans, like the 735A model, while T40/T41/T42/R50/R51 (ATI GPU) BIOS will not.

Bottom line, any B-stepping Dothan CPU would be the best upgrade for the project R51.

(You can search the forum for much more info on these upgrades.)

My R52 (1858-CTO based on 1858-W14) came with a Celeron 1.4. and 910GML graphics. (400MHz bus)
Having problems with that mobo, I was lucky to find a full R52 (1860-A13 based on 1860-2YU) base on fleabay for $125.-.
The mobo came with a Dothan 1.7, 915GM graphics (533MHz bus), Firewire and all the bits (PCMCIA cage, CD-cage, cooler etc.).

What T4x would be compatible with my new R52 concoction?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

R52's are roughly equivalent to T43's, they share BIOS and EC images...and many parts.
