From what I can tell, 91P7299 is supposed to be the P/N (not FRU) of the inverter. If so, then there's this:

Ray, once again you've proven that you are the Thinkpad master.

Look who else says that part will work :).

" you need part numbers 91P7336 or 91P7299 for the inverter"

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=46796

As a side note, I am typing this from the R51 running Linux Mint live....so ethernet works, as does sound. Shoutcast sounds good on the R51 speakers. No problems there.

Edit: Done, the inverter is on order.

I don't consider myself a "master"... more like, "dogged". I ran across the P/N during one of my web searches. There also was a Hitachi part number: INVC648

OK, in case anyone is keeping track, so far this project has cost;

$61.11 - R51 and Toshiba Laptops
$18.98 - Inverter
-----------
$80.09 - Total

This is an excellent idea, and could turn out to be a valuable resource for forum members. I have wondered why we don't have such a reference on the site already.

Having members contribute parts is a fun way of supporting what will turn out to be useful info for everybody. Although, it doesn't give an accurate look at what it could cost the average enthusiast to do a similar project.

Still, a big thumbs up to ya Harry, keep up the good work! :thumbs-UP:

Neil, good point about the cost to the average Joe. I think once we get enough money in the collective bank, we can actually source parts from real retail channels. Maybe that can be part of the next project.

Sarbin, the R51 takes 9.5mm HD's.

Sarbin, not a problem, and thanks for lookin out. ajkula66 was going to ship a drive over when he gets a chance.

Another update - the R51 has an Intel 2200BG Wireless adapter in it and it works just fine, on Linux anyway.

The hard drive arrived today. Thanks George!.

Here's a first look at our machine on XP.

It has an R51 recovery partition, which XP was installed from.

Personal note, the NMB keyboards on these machines are terrific.

Parts still needed;

CDROM drive (UB Enhanced or UB Slim)
Hard drive cover

Glad to hear that the HDD has made it intact...

This thing is starting to look really good...I may just end up buying it to replace my daughter's T41...

It takes a max of 2 x 1GB PC2700 ...and it flies when you add a Dothan CPU and a 7200rpm HD to that... :) Centrino heaven.

George. if we added an LCD cover, we're approaching a 9 easily if the LCD works out the way I believe it will. Your daughter would love it.

Possibly a CCFL if the inverter on order does not fix the LCD problem.

sarbin, thanks for lookin out. Yeah these 15" models use a unique hard drive cover. It has long arms on it because the drive is so deep on these models. Last time I needed one I had to special order it from Wibony in Japan.

Hard drive cover at Wibony, $13 shipped

This one is $10 shipped, from the USA too

Here's one with the caddy and screws for $12 shipped

wibony has a good rep here, but shipping from asia might take a while.

i saw the 2nd and 3rd links. the 2nd doesn't look like it comes with the drive cover screw, whereas the 3rd does, along with the caddy and caddy screws.

i think i'll snag #3. do you need the caddy or can i keep it?

Virge, sarbin, sorry about the cover SNAFU...I simply forgot Virge volunteered to provide one. My bad ...

On a different but related topic, the hard drive is defective. It had a hard time loading XP SP3, so ran chkdsk and asked it to repair all errors, then I ran PC-Doctor and the Hitachi Drive Fitness Tests.

PC-Doctor says "Hard Drive Surface Scan Test - Failed".
DFT says "Failure code 0X73 - Defective drive, excessive shock."

So, the bottom line is that we're still looking for a hard drive :).

I'll take care of that as I promised I would...should've tested it with PC-Doctor prior to sending it out...worked fine in my R31...oh well...

I have a 12 gig 4200 and a 30 gig 5400 (thicker but fits the older T and A). The 30 gig is about as slow as a 4200 and clicks loudly but both have always worked flawlessly. I've just upgraded those machines to much faster drives over the years. Let me know if you need one of them.
Also I have a stick or two of 256 PC2100 ram. Not sure if that's compatible. Let me know.

Ps. I see someone is donating an UBslim optical drive. I could use a DVD or DVD RW if anyone else has them laying around. Obviously I accept donations but don't expect them. I haven't had one up to now but it would be more convenient than going through the network every time I want to install something or rip a movie for a trip.
