denisky, as stated, insulation and fitment are key. the bottom of these drives look like they have exposed electronics and the white plastic sheet in the caddy protects that. all of my drives are in caddies.

Now I wonder why those HDD manufacturers don't ship their products with the caddy if it is that important. They expose the electronics instead.
If I use a caddy, is there any possibility to reduce the annoying heat generated by the HDD? I am sorry if I ask too many stupid questions.

Different laptop manufacturers use different types of caddies.
And yes, caddy will minimize the heat dissipation.
