unknown device

#1 Post by new_user » Sun Aug 24, 2008 10:40 pm

I installed XP. I got all the drivers. Everything is installed. But in device manager 1 still says unknown device. Nothing is installed expect mini pci wireless card. No external devices. Ethernet and modem and everything is got drivers working. No yellow ?. Even mini pci card installed OK. So I have no idea what else could be unknown device.

i presume this was a retail xp install rather than from a recover set, correct?

Just off the top of my head; try going to the Lenovo support site and find the downloads for your machine and get the ACPI power management software. Chances are good that, that's the culprit. Remember to to the the Drivers folder at the root of C: and run the set up for it afterwards.

Yes retail does it matter? And does anybody still sell old restore disks like for my r40e? Also yes it was pm that helped. I installed it and the device manager reinstall driver and it found pm something or the other. No more unknown device.

retail installs tend to leave a few 'unknown' devices, as you've found out. a recovery install won't. it may still need driver updates, but you won't have anything listed as 'unknown'.

if you want to buy a recovery set, your best bet is to post a 'wtb' in marketplace. tpcollector sells sets, but i don't know about the r40e. you could send a pm to inquire.
