Windows XP Pro reinstall - Unkown device

#1 Post by Chappy » Thu Aug 28, 2008 10:49 am

Hi,

After a clean Windows install, it keeps showing an unrecognized network adaptor device.

The ID is PCI\VEN_168C\DEV1014&SUBSYS_058A101&REV_01

All I tried so far didn't work. Windows XP still doesn't recognize that device.

Thanks in advance,

We will need to know the model and type number from the bottom of your unit (such as 2649-51U) and in device manager what network adapters are already installed?

using: http://www.pcidatabase.com/ the vendor and device ids come back as:
vendor 168C = Atheros Communications Inc.
device 1014 = Atheros AR5212 802.11abg wireless

so, from here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-64283 you need to pick the right wireless ethernet card driver. there are two listed as "Thinkpad" wireless vs. Intel. i don't know enough to tell you which, if either is, is the correct one.

Thanks for your help, sarbin.

Yes I also tried everything on ibm.com, no joy.

After some more research I've also found this:
http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/ ... ws-XP.html

But did not work :(

What you have there is very similar to an IBM 802.11a/b/g Mini PCI Adapter II. I have one of these, and it has the hardware ID as follows:

PCI\VEN_168C&DEV1014&SUBSYS_057E1014&REV_01

You may be able to use the IBM driver but there is a reasonable chance you may not. Otherwise you could try modifying the IBM driver to suit your hardware ID.

Finally, I'v been able to install the IBM driver but with the method as described here
To install the driver, I simply unzipped the downloaded archive, awlc4030_v4_0_0_1733.zip, I fired up the Windows Device Manager (Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Click Device Manager), and looked up the wireless network adapter in the device list.
I opened its Properties window from its context menu, went into the Driver tab, and clicked Update Driver...
I opted to Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), then Don't search, I will choose the driver to install.
I clicked Have disk..., browsed to the directory in which I had unzipped the archive, and selected the ".inf" file that I found there.
Windows gave me an Update Driver Warning, telling me that Installing this device driver is not recommended because Windows cannot verify that it is compatible with your hardware. If the driver is not compatible, your hardware will not work correctly and your computer might become unstable or stop working completely. Do you want to continue installing this driver?
Since the system would be unstable with drivers that Windows did consider "compatible" with my hardware, I thought, "What the heck!" and clicked "Yes."
