Restored A31s....unknown device.

#1 Post by Excalibur418 » Fri Aug 29, 2008 6:31 pm

I got a set of restore CDs for my A31s. One is a 2652-C3U and the other is a 2652-P3U. I restored them both with the CD set and the 2652-C3U still says "unknown device" in Device Manager. Its under the USB part of the Device Tree and there is no vendor i.d. or anything. It just says its a USB or something. I think that usb port might be damaged. I'm showing the same detected usb hubs and ports on both laptops. Any thoughts? The 2652-P3U restored fine with everything detected.

Does the machine with the unknown device have a fingerprint reader?

No... they are both alike. The only difference is the cpu speed between them and harddrive size. The both have Atheros cards in them and the drivers have been loaded for both of them with no problem. I'm at a loss.

You may want to check the USB port itself on the faulty machine.

Go into the Device Manager (Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager), select the device, right click and select properties. Choose the Details tab, select the Device Instance ID and copy/paste the result back here.

Is it an A31 or an A31p?

If it's a A31p it's usually the video capture card. Choose to pick the device driver yourself, go to sound video & game controllers or whatrever it's called, and choose Philips on the left and then pick out the video capture on the right.

Should be the ASPI driver.

This comment intrigued me enough to ask what interaction has the video capture card with the ASPI driver?

Thanks.

I can't answer about the ASPI driver but I think if you look closely at the properties box for the "Unknown Device" it says somewhere in there "on the ATI Fire GL 7800" or something similar, which to me indicated video related.

So, I opened up device manager on my older A31p and under Sound video & game it listed the Philips device.

On the newer A31p, it had an Unknown Device. I chose the Philips capture device from the list and the Unknown Device went away and Device Manager now looks similar to the pic shown. I believe it's the 6th line up from the bottom, the video decoder. Sorry, I didn't pay attention close enouf to remember if "Legacy Video Capture Devices" was present before choosing the Philips or not.

Hmm. This seems interesting. The capture card driver is incorporated with the ATi video driver package. I've been having a issue with the package failing to fully uninstall or correctly and fully install.

I had not noticed an entry in the USB device tree but will investigate this further and comment that this driver package has been the most problematic since I purchased the 2653-R9U. Looking for alternatives now.

Thanks!

My resolution to this issue was that I had been sold a planar with only the ATi Mobility FireGL 7500 chipset. Needs the 7800!

FYI, the driver for Radeon 7500 and Fire Gl7800 is the same...

As for the OP's missing device, it likely was a security chip (TPM).
