Another R50p question... Fn-F7 display switching

#1 Post by sarbin » Sun Sep 21, 2008 10:52 pm

i've gotta problem dogging me... :x

using fn-f7 to toggle between lcd --> ext display --> both --> lcd, when switching to "both", the lcd display begins to paint pretty slowly and sometimes does not complete. other times it just stays in "external" mode. the result is the system needs rebooting.

anyone have some suggestions i can try to resolve this?

as background, the machine was recently set up from recover disks and a few, select ibm/lenovo drivers were updated. at one point, i thought this was related to the power mgmt driver, which i updated from 1.26 to 1.50. since then i have tried backleveling to 1.43, which didn't help, then 1.26, which seemed to work. i then tried 1.30 and the symptoms returned. so, back to 1.26, but no joy this time.

help! please?
i'm beginning to go a little batty with all of the permutations...

tia.

thx, George.
is that a customized ati driver package? i haven't updated the video driver from the matrix yet and was hoping not to need to.

a new piece of info... it seems that the fn-f7 toggle works in a windows safe boot session. no on-screen display or presentation director drivers loaded in the session. so... i uninstalled both in a normal session and rebooted. and... no joy in a normal boot session.

it's gotta be some combo of drivers...

further update...

i installed the latest ati video driver from the matrix, and... no joy. :x

i installed the system interface driver, and still... no joy. :x :x

so, i recovered the system back to factory state from the hpa. there are no "unknown devices" in device manager and all seems normal. i did no driver updates or ui customizations other than to change the behavior of fn-f7 to "toggle" via the options in presentation director, and... you guessed it... no joy! :x :x :x

i don't think i've ever been quite so stymied in 10+ years of thinkpad ownership/usage!

has anyone seen this kind of thing? help! please!

a bit more info... i hope it helps someone to steer me in the right direction.

the hang-up problem seems to be switching from lcd+external display mode back to lcd-only mode.
so...
1st fn-f7 tap switches lcd ---> external just fine
2nd fn-f7 tap switches external ---> lcd+external just fine
3rd fn-f7 tap, which should switch from lcd+external ---> lcd, hangs up.

i've also created presentation director profiles for external and lcd+external. i see the same behavior going from dual mode back to lcd by picking the mode from pd's fn-f7 pop-up screen. i can switch between lcd and external repeatedly, with no problem.

finally, i see the same behavior using the icons in the thinkpad configuration applet. i can switch between lcd and external all day, but if i engage dual mode and try to go back to lcd only... boom.
