R52 intermittent shut down on AC only (battery is fine)

#1 Post by ottenm » Sat Sep 27, 2008 5:41 pm

Hello-

I have an R52 that has been shutting down intermittently for the last 4 or 5 months. Sometimes repeatedly within the hour, other times running even under load for 7-10 days. Take, for instance, the two times I left it with a trusted shop. In and out of loads/diags for 10 days, never quit. Sometimes it shuts down under load, sometimes with nothing but a text editor open.

It's a complete 1/4-second shutdown, no errors on restart, no indication of any issues anywhere in the Event Viewer (running XP Pro). I watched the temperature for a while until my free trial ran out. It seemed to climb into the high 80's, maybe low 90's, the fan would rev up and drop the temp 20 degrees in a few seconds.

A few weeks ago I realized it seemed to shutdown only when on AC. I watched this for a while and got 6 shutdowns on AC, none on battery. So I replaced the AC Adapter with a brand new one from Lenovo. Unchanged symptoms. I'm at 10 shutdowns on AC, 0 on the battery. Battery recharges and holds just as it always has.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Welcome to the forum.

May be the A/C socket and the pigtail connector needs to be replaced.

Thanks a lot!

Neither make any sense to me, although I did have a tech guy say he thought the A/C socket had to be good if my battery was charging.

Thanks for the suggestions sjthinkpader, will look into both of them. It's been kind of a long/barren road sorting it out.[/quote]

Intermittent connector will charge battery. But without the battery in place, any interruption with shutdown the computer. The A/C jacks in R5x are built pretty well normally. But still be your problem.

Uh oh, little yellow flag here on this thread: We don't pull the battery, we just leave it connected, and it's definitely not drained completely. Shouldn't an interruption just switch to battery?
