Error 2010, does any of these HDs work if ignored?

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Mon Oct 13, 2008 12:30 pm

Got an R52 1860-A13.
I've tried these HDs in it, but they give the Error 2010:

Seagate Momentus 5400.2 40GB, model ST94813A
Fujitsu 40GB, model MHV2040AH
Western Digital Scorpio 40GB, model WD400VE

I can set the BIOS to continue after that error, but after reading the big thread on T43s, I don't trust that option.
Has anyone successfully installed one of the above?
In other words, is it safe to ignore Error 2010 with one of these?

Its safe to ignore, I was using a drive with the 2010 error for a year without a problem. It was a WD not Seagate, but shouldn't make a difference. The error has nothing to do with the hardware reliability, its just IBM/Lenovo complaining that you aren't using their hardware.

But I recently bought a Hitachi 160GB drive that I was able to flash the IBM firmware to and get rid of the error (unfortunately reduced the drive to 137MB capacity).

I bought it from newegg, but the price has gone up $20 since I bought it, so best bet is zipzoomfly:

My wife's R52 (Type 1860) has one of the big WD 250Gb HDDs in it with the BIOS set to ignore the 2010. It's been running like a charm for over 2 months now. My sense is that the 2010 is like the 1802 error that complains about the WiFi card not being on the whitelist that people just ESC'd out of (until the hack came along anyway).

There's no ESC-ing out of 1802 error...that is the main problem with it, unlike 2010, machine will not continue the boot process unless the card is physically removed.

At least on A31p, T30 and R40, in my experience, and off the top of my head...

I wasn't able to Esc out of the error on a T4x machines. However from personal experience with different Atheros chipped cards beginning with T23s, I was either able to hit Esc or as in the case with our A31 didn't give an error with the same card.

So obviously there is some variation on a case by case basis.

I never knew that T23s would give a "1802 error", but it's relieving to know it can be bypassed...I guess I'll start playing with mine in a couple of days... :D

RBS, I've had a Seagate 80/7200 in one of my past T43p machines for months and could report no issues with it apart from boot error. No reason IMO for a smaller Seagate to behave any differently...

Based on above comments, I put in the Fujitsu and started to use the restore CDs. They installed/copied fine, incl.the restore partition.

But there are a few big NO-NOs in it.
My R52 has the Intel 915GM chipset, and for some reason ATI Hydravision was installed. Under screen Adapter properties, nothing is mentioned, all fields are <unavailable>.
Also arch-enemy Norton AV 2003 was put on!

I used a set for R50/R50p and T41/T41p.
Could that be the reason?

I think I'll wipe it all again and start afresh with a Corporate XP-Pro/SP3, install System Update and fetch the latest drivers from IBM/Lenovo.
And I will use the WD Scorpio instead.

Thanks for all your help everyone!

The set of disks that you've been using must have been for ATi-based machines, I went through the same thing with my latest Intel-based T43. Just download the Intel driver from Lenovo's site and you're good to go...

Both Norton and ATi can be easily removed...BTW Norton is there by default on most recovery sets for newer machines...

Good luck.

The R52/T43 use a different set of Restore Disks than T40-T42.

Alternately you can buy a small OEM disk someone upgraded and use the service partition from it. That's how I got the R52/T43 service partition back and how I keep various type of service partitions including Windows2000 for A2x series.

To tell you the truth, I don't give a hoot for the Service Partition.
It's wasted space, and the laptop is for my own use.
I rather install MY way from scratch, and then take an Acronis image.
