A31 No external sound
A31 No external sound
I just picked a a31 off of craigslist a few weeks ago, got it fixed and its running fine now, but I have no external sound. I have sound if I plug headphones in, but nothing is coming out of the onboard speakers. I though maybe I put the speaker connector in backwards, but only seemed to fit one way. Is it possible to put it in wrong? I have yet to actually test the speakers them selves, they could be blown. Could it matter the sound driver? or if I'm getting headphone sound, I should be getting external sound? Thanks for the help
Current laptops: ThinkPad A31, Gateway Solo 1200 (<--- I hate this laptop) 3 I-Buddie 4 Notepads

It's possible that they are blown, but typically, if you have blown speakers, they just sound bad.... not, no sound at all. I'd suspect the culprit to be on the MB. A few months back, I got a T41 that did the same thing.spedlio wrote:I just picked a a31 off of craigslist a few weeks ago, got it fixed and its running fine now, but I have no external sound. Audio chip on A31 machines is a known trouble maker, and you should consider yourself lucky for still having the headphone output. It usually dies completely, and that calls for an external sound card...
Good luck.
Good luck.

If he has audio on the headphone jacks, that would tell me the audio chip is good. I'd suspect the headphone jack itself. The jack has a contact to cut off the speakers when the headphones are plugged in. It's probably not making, um, contact. Not sure how to fix this -- first thing I'd try is plugging and unplugging the headphones about 100 times
